More waterways have been opened up in Onitsha-South Local Government
Area, as desilting of drainages embarked upon by the Anambra State
Government continues.
At the exercise in Onitsha-South Council Area, Governor Willie Obiano had ordered the third phase of the exercise in
the twenty-one local government areas across the State, to address
environmental challenges associated with flooding, as well as ensure
public health.
Community leaders in the area, including Chief Chukwuma Akajiobi and Mr Afam Udeogalanya, as well as a keke rider, Mr. Simon Nwankwo, who expressed delight over the desilting exercise, urged the State government to bring stiffer penalties to discourage environmental abuses, especially in some commercial parks in the area.
Commending Governor Obiano’s response to the needs of people of the
area, the Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Prince
Emeka Asoanya, noted that some water tunnels in the area had been
blocked for over fifteen years, adding that the desilting exercise has
greatly solved environmental and health problems in the area.
Leading the exercise in company of the Senior Special Assistant to
Governor Willie Obiano on Environment, Mrs Njideka Oraedum, the
Managing Director, Anambra State Clear Drainage And Forest
Preservation Agency, Mr Chido Obidiegwu, re-echoed the appeal to
Ndi-Anambra to desist from actions that cause flooding such as dumping
of refuse and building structures on waterways, insisting that severe
consequences await defaulters.
