International Day Against Drug Abuse And Illicit Trafficking was set aside by the United Nations to creat awareness of the
major problems that illicit drugs represent to society.
The global observance is supported by individuals, communities and
various groups.

Correspondent, Njideka Okoye, who gave an insight on the importance of
the day reports that government, organizations and individuals in many
countries have actively participated in larger scale events to promote
the awareness on dangers associated with illicit drugs.
The United Nation’s Office on Drugs and Crime has over the years been
actively involved in launching campaigns to mobilize support for drug
control.

Barring his mind on the significance of the day, the chairman, House
Committee on Youth Empowerment, Creative Economy and Sports, Hoourable
Noble Igwe called for greater awareness on the dangers of drug abuse
and illicit trafficking as it has adverse effects on both individuals
and society.

Honourable Igwe, who is also the member representing Ogbaru One
Constituency, said that drug abuse and illicit trafficking, rampant
among youths have negative influences on them as it causes brain
damage and increase in social vices and advised youths to engage in
meaningful ventures and participate in various skills acquisition and
empowerment programs of the state government to become meaningful
members of the society.

For the Chairman House Committee on Gender, Social Development and
Children Affairs, Honourable Nonso Okafor, drug abuse is very
destructive as it damages both the individual and the country at
large.

The Lawmaker, who represents Nnewi North Constituency at the state
Assembly noted that influence of drug can make one indulge in rape,
arm robbery and other social vices and urged people to stand out
against drug abuse to drastically reduce crime.
A Youth Leader, Comrade Ekene Aghasiefo, called on youths to channel
their youthful strength towards the development of their community,
the state and the nation at large.
