This month’s edition of the monthly sanitation exercise, aimed at making sure that Ndi Anambra keep their surroundings clean, witnessed appreciable level of compliance in Awka and environs .
The state Ministry of Environment through its enforcement machinery monitored the exercise, observed that in some parts of the city there was movement of vehicles and persons without hindrance.
At Amaenyi Awka, people were seen cutting grasses and other environmental cleanup, while at Aroma junction, men of OCHA Brigade, ASWAMA, Peace Corp among others mounted road block at strategic points with Black Maria stopping vehicles and persons to enforce compliance compliance.
At the Eke Awka Market, though closed on government directive, few road side traders were seen, including tricycles and vehicles moving passengers to their different destinations.
Some defaulters, who were arrested by the enforcement team, were brought in a Black Maria before the mobile court within the Central Police Station, Awka for trial.
Speaking later , the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Dr Emmanuel Okafor, reiterated the need for people to stay at home and comply with the sanitation exercise, as according to him, this period of the Coronavirus pandemic calls for cleanliness and healthy lifestyle.
The Director of Environmental Health Pollution Control, Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Edith Ike, noted that due to the negligence observed during previous environmental sanitations, the setting up of Mobile Court became necessary, to deal with offenders and drive home the importance of the monthly sanitation.
