As more waterways are being opened up for free flow of water in the ongoing desilting exercise across Anambra State, government has warned that existing laws against environmental abuses will be enforced to the letter, to discourage human action that causes flooding.

The exercise, which has been carried out in Onitsha North and South, as well as Awka South Local government areas, is aimed at ensuring public health and addressing environmental challenges associated with flooding.

Speaking during a visit to Idemili North, Nnewi North and Orumba South Local government areas, the Managing Director, Anambra State Clear Drainage And Forest Preservation Agency, Mr Chido Obidiegwu, warned that appropriate sanctions will be applied, if people fail to be proactive in avoiding environmental threats such as flooding and erosion, which are caused by dumping of refuse and building structures on waterways.

Chairmen of the Local Government Areas visited, Mr Asha Nnabuife, Prince Chukwudi Orizu and Mr Raymond Onyegu, while highlighting some of the benefits of the desilting exercise, called for its sustenance, even as they enjoined people of the areas to avoid all forms of environmental abuses.

The Member representing Orumba South constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Emma Nwafor and other residents of the areas, including Messrs Clement Sibeudu and Amaechi Enye, who narrated sad experiences on the roads whenever it rains, commended Governor Willie Obiano for embarking on the exercise to ensure free flow of water, promising to join in sensitizing the people against environmental abuses.

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Environment, Mrs Njideka Oraedum, as well as the Executive Assistant to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Gerald Akaeze, were present during the exercise.
