Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Public Petition has assured its commitment to addressing the lingering face off that exists between the people of Nkerehi and Umuchukwu in Orumba South local government area.
House of Assembly correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim, who was at the sitting of the House Committee and the two parties reports that refusal of some sections of the community to accept change of name from Nkerehi community to Umuchukwu has been the subject of dispute in the area.
They alleged in the petition that a prominent personality in the community, Dr Godwin Maduka, has been intimidating them into accepting the change of name.
It is on this background that the Committee met with both parties involved in the matter.
Speaking during the meeting, the Chairman, House Committee on Public Petition, Honourable Emeka Aforka explained that the Committee will work very hard to address the matter and build cordial relationship between both parties.
He maintained that the committee will limit its deliberations to the subject matter of the petition, adding that any other issue concerning Nkerehi and Umuchukwu already pending in court will not be entertained by the committee.
In his remark, the spokesman of Nkerehi, Mr. Basil Igweike explained that they have written plethora of petitions to the appropriate authorities to arrest the matter but did not get result, stressing that they took the case to the House as their last resort.
On his part, Dr Maduka’s, spokesman, Mr. Anayo Emejue described all the allegations leveled against the defendant as falsehood aimed at causing mischief and bringing his high reputation to mockery.
The Committee however adjourned hearing on the petition to seventeenth of July, 2020.
