Young Women Christian Association of Nigeria, YWCA, Anambra State chapter has joined its voice to say no to rape and sexual abuses .
The group, carrying placards with inscriptions: “Together we can end violence against women”, “Rape destroys human dignity”, “No woman deserves rape”, “Speak out today for the next victim could be you”, “Stop epidemic of rape and child abuse”, among others marched from All Saints Cathedral Church, through DMGS round about to Oguta road sensitizing people against rape and its negative effects on victims.
Speaking during the exercise, Anambra state Area Council representative of YWCA, Lady Chizoba Uzochukwu said rape destroys the dignity of women and creates psychological trauma hence the need for all hands to be on deck to put a stop to the ugly development.
Lady Chizoba said the Young Women s Association, formed to protect, educate, rehabilitate and empower women to be good leaders and entrepreneurs decided to go round the commercial city of Onitsha to tell the world that rape against a child is rape against all, hence the clarion call for all to be on the watch and expose rapists among them.
On her part, the immediate past National President of YCWA, Lady Chikwue Ochiagha, who condemned sexual violence against women in its entirety, while describing it as evil that destroys destinies, advocated more enlightenment and education of the girl child to enable them to speak out whenever they are asexually harassed.
Adding their voices, the Youth leader, Anambra State Council of YWCA, Miss Chinwe Onyezia said it is not a crime to be a girl and called on government, church leaders and law enforcement agencies to assist in the fight against rape while, Mrs. Ify Obiekwe stressed that women are made by God and deserve to be respected urging government to institute child protection policy in schools.
