The Member representing Anambra East Constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Obinna Emeneka has distributed relief materials to the downtrodden in his constituency and beyond as palliatives to cushion the effect of coronavirus pandemic on them.

The gesture which is his own way of celebrating his forty-second birthday drew widows, sickle cell patients and vulnerable groups from different parts of the State.

House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that the Lawmaker distributed over one thousand bags of rice, noodles, face masks, hand sanitizers and a one million naira cash donation to them.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Honourable Emeneka explained that he chose to celebrate his birthday with widows and vulnerable groups to give them sense of belonging and make them realize that they are not alone.

The Legislator who announced that he had before now conducted series of free medical services for the downtrodden within his constituency noted that widowhood was not a death sentence and that widows should not wallow in self pity but muster enough courage to stand against all forms of dehumanization and molestations such as rape, sexual assaults, among others meted on them and their daughters.

He urged them to spread the message of COVID-19 down to the grassroot while maintaining all the protective guidelines against the virus.

In his remark, the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Uche Okafor noted that what Honourable Emeneka did was outstanding as vulnerable groups were special class of people with special needs and that helping to ameliorate their situation was worthwhile.

In their reactions, the Catholic Bishop of Ekwulobia Diocese, Most Reverend Peter Okpaleke and the Auxiliary Bishop of Awka Diocese, Mist Reverend Jonas Benson Okoye extolled Honourable Emeneka’s decision to dedicate his forty-second birthday celebration to the downtrodden and for dolling out palliatives to them to help alleviate their sufferings occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic.

Some of the beneficiaries, including the National Co-ordinator of Persons Living with Sickle Cell Anaemia, Mrs Aisha Edward and Mrs Juliet Muonwuba thanked the Lawmaker for his benevolence, adding that they have found solace, succour and respite in the humanitarian gesture he gave them.
