Leaders of African extraction have been urged to move away from leadership based on individualism to that which centres on the people, through knowledge, fear of God bearing in mind the legacies of the late Dr Nelson Mandela, who despite oppression encountered in the struggle against Apartheid, was able to bring selfless and unifying leadership to South Africa.

After his twenty-seven years in imprisonment by the then white minority rule, Dr Nelson Mandela eventually became the first Black majority leader of South Africa and instead of finding reasons to take revenge against the minority white, opted for reconciliation, serving a single term as President and bringing about development in South Africa, which all became the embedded trait Mandela was known for.

Speaking on the significance of the day, a community leader, Dr. Amobi Nwokafor described him as a leadership model, a gift to Africa and an exemplary character worthy of emulation, stressing that African leaders should become selfless like him, to accelerate progress
and development in Africa.

Dr. Nwokafor pointed out that the problem of racism in different parts of the world shouldn’t be, given that Nelson Mandela became colour blind while in the struggle against Apartheid because he saw humanity as one, just like God sees every human and that there is hope for humanity as far as racism is concerned and called for unification of Africa in all positive ramifications for growth and development.
For a German based legislator and founder, Re-educating Africans on the Dangers of Unplanned Journey Abroad and Empowering the Youths, Mr Eddy Duru, Nelson Mandela represents selflessness, inclusiveness, equality and a great role model.

He maintained that leadership is not about long years in office but selflessness which Nelson Mandela exemplified, as Africans and underscores the need for them to imbibe the tenets of real democratic principle of free and fair election and people oriented leadership.
For the traditional ruler of Nanka in Orumba North Local Government Area, Igwe Godwin Ezeilo, leaders should emulate selfless leadership as exemplified by the late Dr Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela Day is a United Nations Day instituted in 2009 and also coincides with his birthday, which is to remember the legacies he brought to bear in his struggles to end Apartheid in South Africa and leadership qualities.
