The State Ministry of Environment in collaboration with DOBE Anambra
OCHA and Environmental Health Officers monitored this months’ edition
of the Environmental Sanitation Exercise at some markets inOnitsha.
Correspondent, Emengini Osadebe, who was among the team reports that
there was partial compliance at some of the markets visited.

The markets visited include Megafu by Oguta Road Market, Onowu Anatogu
firewood Market, Provision market by Menax, Ochanja Market as well as
Ibrufish Market, Onitsha.

At the markets, some traders had already displayed their wears as at
eight o’clock in the morning while some were seen hanging around
waiting for the time to lapse.

On sighting the team the traders stated scampering to safety while
the team forced them to pack and sweep their environment.
Speaking to the ABS, the leader of the team and Senior Special
Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Chief Mrs. Chinwe Aniemena
warned that the state government will not take it lightly with anyone,
who violates the State’s Sanitation law and called on the people of
the state to comply with the clean up exercise.

On her part, the Public Relation Officer, Ministry of Environment,
Mrs. Lilian Onyenyionwu appealed to the state citizenry to clean up
their environment and open up their drainages.

The Head of Department, Environment and Sanitation Onitsha North Local
Government Area, Mrs. Elizabeth Ezeiru challenged the State citizenry
to key into the state government vision of keeping the state clean
especially at this period of COVID-19 pandemic.

Some of the traders, including Messers Stanley Ibeto and Chinazo
Yokolo commended the state government’s efforts towards ensuring a
clean and safe environment, pledging their readiness to comply with
the state environmental sanitation law.
