Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging
Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioner for Basic Education
to enforce the establishment of school farms in primary and secondary
schools for Agricultural Science practicals.
The House passed the resolution following a motion sponsored to that
effect by the member representing Ogbaru Two Constituency, Sir
Somtoochukwu Udeze during plenary.

House of Assembly correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that while
explaining the motion, Sir Somtoochukwu noted that Governor Obiano has
encouraged food production through different policies and programmes
and the establishment of the school farms will compliment his efforts
as it will rekindle the interest of students in Agriculture.

Supporting the motion, the member representing Orumba North
Constituency, Honourable Emeka Aforka said that the motion if
implemented by the Executive Arm of Government will serve as a
wonderful source of inspiration, motivation and encouragement to Ndi
Anambra as well as guarantee food sufficiency in the state.

On his part, the member representing Awka North Constituency,
Honourable John Nwokoye, who regretted that many youths roaming the
streets in search of white collar jobs have no interest in Agriculture
because they were not exposed to it on time, described the motion as a
step in the right direction.

In their separate contributions, the member representing Idemili South
Constituency and his Njikoka One Counterpart, Dr. Timothy Ifedioramma
maintained that the introduction of agricultural practice in education
curriculum will curb unemployment among youths.

The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Uche Okafor described the
motion as apt and read out the resolution to the House, while the
lawmakers supported it through a voice vote.
