Alor community in Idemili South Council Area, went agog as the
traditional ruler, Igwe Mac-Anthony Okonkwo rolled out the drums, in
celebration of this year’s new yam festival.

The ceremony, which was the sixth edition, was held at his palace at Alor.

New yam festival, an age long culture, celebrated annually to
appreciate God for bumper harvest, was a carnival of sort as cultural
troupes and masquerades were at hand, while traditional rulers,
friends, well wishers and associates took turns to pay homage, to the
monarch surrounded by his cabinet members and Ndi-Ichie.

According to the Monarch, the festival serves as a rallying point of
togetherness and unification of the eight villages of the community
and ushers in positive development.

Igwe Okonkwo, who poured the symbolic libation, prayed for peace,
unity and progress of the area, as he performed the cutting of the new
yam.

Describing the festival as harvest of thanksgiving, the Traditional
Prime Minister, Dr. Benedict Udeze, who advocated peaceful and
harmonious co-existence, maintained that peace remains panacea for
meaningful development.

Felicitating with the Royal father, the traditional ruler of Akwueze,
Igwe Christopher Eze-Nebo observed that culture promotes tourism and
called for sustainable collaboration in harnessing cultural potential
of the state.

Others, who came to identify with Igwe Okonkwo, including members of
the Missionary Army Chaplain, led by Captain Emeka Onwuegbuna and
member of Igboezue cultural organization, Dr. Chinedu Nsofor, prayed
for wisdom of God, upon the monarch, as he steers the mantle of
leadership of the community.

commenced with prayers by Revered Father Gregory Okafor was held in
compliance with COVID-19 safety protocols.
