August thirteenth of every year is set aside as International Left-handers Day, to celebrate left-handers or lefties globally.
The event was first observed on the thirteenth of August 1976 and was officially declared Left-handers’ Day by Left-handers’ Club on August thirteenth, 1997.

The International Left Hander’s’ Day was meant to promote awareness of the inconveniences faced by left handers in a predominantly right-handed world.
It celebrates their uniqueness and differences of left-handed persons, whom, according to studies, from seven to ten percent of the world’s population.

Also, tests conducted by New York researchers found out that famous intellectuals and elites like Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Benjamin Franklin were left-handed.

Others include the likes of Queen Elizabeth the Second, former President of America, Barrack Obama, the late Al-Queada leader, Osama Bin laden and billionaire like Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey, to name but a few.
Sharing his experience, a left-hander who resides in Awka, Mr. Ifeanyi Okoye, explained that lefties are always known for their greatness, uniqueness and intelligence due to their rarity in the society.

Also commenting on the day, another left-hander, Mr. Arinze Atusiuba as well as a female lefty, Miss Onyinye Okorie, said that they feel more at home with their left hand instead of the conventional right hand, adding that they eat, write, drive and do every other thing with their left hand while a medical practitioner, Dr Chinwendu Onuorah affirmed that left-handedness could sometimes be corrected at childhood stage if discovered early, except in critical cases.
