The Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF, has organised an
occupational safety, health awareness and fire drill exercise for
members of staff of Anambra Broadcasting Service, Awka.
Correspondent Kenechukwu Chukwudi reports that the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF, is a parastatal under
the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, established to provide
social insurance for Nigerian workers against the hazards of work
environment and also to ensure safety of workers through
enlightenment.
In his remark during the Seminar, Mr. Izuka Udoka, who is the Head of
Health, Safety and Environment in the Awka branch of the Agency,
explained that it caters for the welfare of workers, who sustain
injuries or die at the work place, and also provide compensations for
the victims’ family, in case of death.
Mr. Udoka further explained that the scheme does not in any way affect
the workers’ salary but the contributory money is rather paid by the
employers for members of their staff.
However, the benefits accrue to the individual worker in time of
eventuality if all necessary provisions contained in the Act
establishing the Tust Fund is met.
He said the worker and his organisation must notify the Agency, within
twenty one days of any eventuality for the benefit to count.
In his lecture during the seminar, Mr. Charles Chime, revealed that a
lot of work place accidents can be avoided by being aware of safety
precautions to take when necessary and also being on alert and focused
in the work environment.
He also practically explained measures to take in the event of fire
outbreak, such as using the PASS knowledge, which stands for Pull,
Aim, Spray, and Spread, while using the fire extinguisher.
In his vote of thanks during the seminar, on behalf of ABS staff, Mr.
Roy Ekwunife, appreciated the NSITF for their expository lecture and
enlightenment and also thanked the state government and management
board of ABS for enrolling staff on the scheme.
The Acting Director of Administration ABS, Lady Tina Ekenta, the
Director of News and Current Affairs, Mr. Gab Okpalaeze, the head of
ICT unit, Mr. Ugochukwu Afoekelu and host of other staff were present
during the seminar.
