The women wing of the Anambra State Trade Union Congress, TUC, has
embarked on a peaceful protest, awareness and sensitization campaign
against high rate of rape and molestation against the girl child.

members of the Union with placards and inscriptions like, ” government
should implement stiffer punishment for rapists,”, “end rape”, “raise
boys, who respect girls”, “women are not sex toys”, “no to rape is a
collective responsibility” among others, started the campaign from the premises of ABS corporate headquarters through Aroma junction and terminated at the Jerome Udorji State Secretariat, Awka.

Addressing the protesters, the wife of the Governor, Dr Ebelechukwu
Obiano, who described rape as a heinous crime, frowned at some men,
who rape young children, thereby exposing them to pains and agony.
The governor’s wife, represented by the Senior Special Assistant to
the Governor On Donor Agencies, Mrs. Mary Ogugua said that the present
administration is poised to eliminating rape and all forms of violence
against women, noting that through CAFE, she has positively touched
many lives through giving them a sense of belonging and praised the
union for embarking on such key awareness campaign.

The state Head of Service, Barrister Harry Uduh identified the
campaign as timely, noting that rape and violence against women are
now two major problems bedeviling the society, and pledged his total
support for the campaign.
The Commissioner For Children and Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue
represented by the Head of Information in the Ministry, Pastor Nkiru
Iloanya thanked TUC for embarking on the protest, maintaining that her
Ministry will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that rape and all
forms of violence against women are brought to the barest minimum in
Anambra state.

The Anambra State chairman of Trade Union Congress, Comrade Ifeanyi
Okechukwu as well as the state Chairperson of TUC, Comrade Nneka
Nwankwo called on leaders at all levels to enact laws with stiffer
penalties for perpetrators of rape and violence against women and
children, in order to mitigate the ugly scourge in the society even as
they commended Dr Ebelechukwu Obiano for her numerous interventions
and assistance to women and children, as well as less privileged persons in
the society.

In a remark, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Anambra Broadcasting Service, Chief Uche Nworah, represented by Mrs. Ify Unachukwu announced that the station will through its various platforms and channels, support and promote programmes that are geared towards ending rape and violence against women and the girl child.
