Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution condemning the National Water Resources Bill, 2020 being considered at the National Assembly and called for public hearing to ensure public participation in its consideration.

The bill has scaled second reading at the National Assembly.
The resolution was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance sponsored to that effect by the member representing Njikoka Constituency One, Dr. Timothy Ifedioramma during yesterdays plenary in Awka.
House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that Dr.
Ifedioramma maintained that the bill is not people oriented, as envisaged by the section four of the 1999 constitution as amended.

The Legislator disclosed that the bill seeks to bring all water resources and the banks of the water sources under the control of the Federal Government through its agencies to be established by the bill, adding that some sections of the bill make it compulsory for Nigerians to obtain a driller’s permit before sinking a borehole in their homes and entry into land in furtherance of duties.

On his part, the member representing Anambra East Constituency, Honourable Obinna Emeneka who described the bill as baseless and unfounded called on the National Assembly to jettison the idea as if the bill is passed into law, the rights of citizens over fresh water resources will be infringed upon.

The member representing Njikoka Constituency Two, Dr. Pete Ibida noted that it is another plot to emasculate some parts of Nigeria and urged the people to reject the bill.

In his contribution, the member representing Nnewi North Constituency, Honourable Nonso Okafor said that the bill was rejected in the eight Assembly because it is not people oriented.

The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Uche Okafor described the motion as apt and read out the resolution of the House, while the Lawmakers supported it through a voice vote.
