The traditional ruler of Okpuno, Awka South Council Area, Igwe Sunday Okafor, says Global Gag Rule and other related legislations cannot prevent abortions.


He made the statement during an interview with ABS Queen Anigbogu, at his palace in Okpuno.


Global Gag Rule is an American law that bans Non Governmental organizations from the use of US foreign aid for abortion services.
It aims at reducing abortions.


Igwe Okafor said the use of contraceptives is the key to reducing abortion since controlling of human sexual drive is difficult.
He also noted that the use of contraceptives can go a long way in reducing Nigeria’s teeming population.


In her remarks, the Matron in charge of the Primary Health Centre, Akogheli Square, Awka, Mrs. Phibi Iwobi, disclosed that up to thirty women visit the PHC monthly to access family planning services.


Also speaking, the Deputy Director Nursing, Maternal and Child Health, Amawbia, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Anigbogu, hailed the Global Gag Rule saying it will help in reducing abortions.


Speaking on Nigeria’s population, Mrs. Stella Michael, a mother of two and Mrs. Blessing Dilibe a mother of three, both agreed that the use of family planning services is a critical solution to population problem in Nigeria.
