The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Public Petitions has
asked all parties involved in land dispute at Akpu village Ukpo in
Dunukofia Local Government Area to maintain status-quo ante and allow
peace to reign pending the final resolution on the access road case in
the area.

The Committee made the call after it visited the road for an
on-the-spot assessment.

House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that  recently, Chief JI Ifeacho petitioned the Anambra State House of
Assembly seeking to stop the Anambra State Physical Planning Board
from demolishing his family compound which he said he erected legally.
According to him, this was sequel to a land dispute between his family
and his neighbour, Mr. Charles Nwaokpatu, all of the same Ukpo town by
which the Board decided to act by the plea of his neighbour without
hearing from his own side of the story.

Consequently, the Board inscribed remove notice on the wall of
Ifeacho’s compound, which he said he inherited from his forefathers
for over two hundred years.

To this end, the Chairman of the House committee on Public Petitions,
Honourable Emeka Aforka said the House will invite both parties on a
particular date to make their final submissions and address the House
of Assembly accordingly.

Honourable Aforka made it clear that the House has no jurisdiction on
land ownership but is only after the access road leading to a compound
in Ukpo, adding that based on their findings the House will address
all the parties appropriately.

Expressing gratitude to the Committee, the Transition Committee
Chairman for Dunukofia Local Government Area, Mr. Emeka Okonkwo
commended the committee for the way it is handling the matter,
assuring them that whatever resolution reached, shall be acceptable by
both parties.
