The International Community is observing today as Democracy Day.
It is a day established through a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly to encourage government to strengthen and consolidate democracy.
In a good will message to mark the event the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly Right Honourable Uche Okafor maintained that democracy is a fundamental requirement for sustainable development.
The Speaker, who noted that the International Day of Democracy is a day to evaluate the strength of democracy across the globe, stressed the need for various governments to give democracy a chance to thrive by creating an enabling environment for the citizenry to contribute to good governance and reap its benefits.
He commended Governor Willie Obiano for enthroning participatory democracy in Anambra State especially through his twenty million naira Community Choose Your Project Initiative, which he said, has taken development and good governance to the hinterlands.
The State number one lawmaker used the occasion of this year’s International Day of Democracy to commend the State lawmakers for providing democracy dividends for their constituents such as various empowerment programmes and constituency projects to enhance their living standards.
