As Anambra state government continues the opening up of water ways to
ensure free flow of water as well as the safety of the roads it has
warned industrialists to ensure regular maintenance and protection of their environment.
The Managing Director, Anambra Clear Drainage and Forest Prevention
Agency, Mr. Chido Obidiegwu made the call when he continued his
assessment of local government drainage tour to ascertain the level of
free flow of water around the state.
The areas visited included Atani Road in Ogbaru local government area,
Orlu road in Ihiala and Nneni-Adazi-Ani road in Anaocha Local
Government Area during which he flagged off the exercise at all the areas visited .
Mr. Obidiegwu stated that Governor Willie Obiano frowns at manmade environmental hazards the state residents face especially
around industrial areas as they inhale chemicals which pose a great
danger to human existence and warned that after the opening up of the
drainages, the state government will deal decisively with companies
found wanting of not cleaning up their drainages and environment.
He expressed dismay on how residents and industries are comfortable
watching their drainages blocked while flood take over the roads and
damage them and pleaded for attitudinal change towards the environment
in order not to be washed away by it effects.
The Transition Committee Chairman for Ogbaru Local Government Area,
Mr. Arinzechukwu Awogu commended the state Governor for his drive in
ensuring that the drainages which many see as insignificant are kept
clean, noting that their council area is the most favoured, owing to
the fact that they are in a flood prone area.
On their separate reactions, the Transition Committee Chairman for Ihiala, Engr. Jude Obiwulu and his Anaocha counterpart, Mr. Patrick Onyedum while acknowledging the thoughtfulness of Governor Willie Obiano in placing the interest of the rural dwellers as top priority and assured that
the local governments will reintroduce the popular “olu ezi” in
Communities to ensure sustainability of the drive which is geared
towards protecting the environment and it’s habitants.
A trader, Mr. Chikaobi Iwozor who recalled how impassable the Orlu
road by Ihiala usually turn out after rain fall, extolled the
initiative and asked the state government to replicate same to other
flash points of the state to reduce the high rate of flooding
witnessed in major cities.
ABS news crew on arrival witnessed that at the flash points visited, the flood channels were blocked with debris, forcing flood water to divert on the roads but are now being cleared.
