Six children of the same family are now orphans following the collapse
of an uncompleted building at Obofia-Umuota Obosi in Idemili North
Local Government Area.
According to a resident who lives in another building beside the
uncompleted building, Mrs Nkechi Ezigbo, the incident happened, when
the building which according to her has been in existence for almost
twenty years gave way and killed a husband and the wife and injured
two other people who came to buy drinks from the deceased woman.
The Chairman of Obofia Umuota Obosi, Mr. Collins Chukwulobe disclosed
that the uncompleted building belonged to an ex-Banker, who resides in
Lagos saying that the building had been in that condition for almost
fifteen years.
Mr. Chukwulobe said that when he noticed the cracks in the building,
he informed the owner who ordered that the occupants be given a quit
notice, adding that the quit notice was served to the tenants twice
forcing some to quit while some remained adamant before part of the
building collapsed.
He narrated how they struggled to evacuate the victims and rushed
them to a hospital and pleaded for assistance for the children who are
now orphans.
Speaking to the ABS amid tears, the eldest son of the deceased couple,
Chika Ugochukwu, who is fifteen years, said they were inside the
building when it collapsed and killed their parents and called for
assistance from both the government and public spirited individuals.
The first daughter of the deceased couple, Esther Ogochukwu who is
thirteen years old was seen making frantic effort to calm her eight
months old sister, Blessing who is still breastfeeding.
She told the ABS that they are from Nkomoro in Ebonyi State and could
not access their relatives except their mother’s brother, Monday
Nwankpa who lives in Nnewi.
Meanwhile, Anambra State Physical Planning Board has sealed the
collapsed building.
