The Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo SAN, says the Federal Government will soon re-open the land borders.
Vice President Osinbajo, who was responding to a question on the continued closure of the land borders especially at a time the African Continental Free Trade Agreement is being prepared for take-off, said that the government is working with neighbouring countries on the terms of reopening the border.
The Vice President, who spoke during a webinar organized by the African Report, titled, Bouncing back: Nigeria’s post-pandemic recovery plan, maintained that the federal government is working with its neighbours to see on what terms it would re-open those borders saying that at the moment, the country is undertaking joint border patrols to control smuggling along the borders.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had in October 2019 ordered the closure of the borders to check the menace of smuggling of goods and arms and ammunition into the country and to protect local businesses.
The closure was, however, greeted by mixed reactions from professional organizations, economists and individuals.
Heads of countries like Ghana and Benin Republic had also appealed to President Buhari to reconsider the closure, but the President maintained that the borders will remain closed until the final report of the committee set up on the matter is considered.
He added that neighbouring countries must also show commitment to curtailing smuggling from their ends.
