It was a moment of thanksgiving and gratitude to God for seeing Ndi Nawgu through the last farming season up to harvesting period.
The traditional ruler of the community , Igwe Okaa-onwuogu as the custodian of the town’s tradition and culture, celebrated new yam festival.

The festival which began with a holy mass saw the people of Nawgu in a joyous mood for what God has done in their community more especially in giving them long life and peace.

Igwe Okaa-Onwuogu was ushered in with Uvie dance, followed by breaking of Kola nut rituals.
Another significant thing was the cutting of old yam into pieces and disposing of same, signifying that they have stopped eating it since they harvested the new one.

Speaking after the rituals, Igwe Okaa-onwuogu said the festival is the custom of Ndi Igbo to thank God for a good harvest, particularly harvest of yam which is the king of all crops.

Igwe Okaa-Onwuogu commended Governor Willie Obiano for his untiring efforts towards makeling communities better than he met them pointing out that the state government through the CSDA initiated and completed four projects in their community.

Earlier in a homily during a holy mass celebrated to mark the new yam festival, Reverend Father Eugene Anowai of Philosophy Department, Chukwuemeka Odumegu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, said they only celebrate yam because it is a spectacular gift God gave to man.

While thanking God for a new dawn at Nawgu, the President General of the community, Mr. Nnamdi Okeke noted that there is relative peace in their community as the traditional institution and Nawgu Development Union are working in tandem for the progress and development of the community.

Paying homage to the traditional ruler, the Secretary, Igwe’s Cabinet, Chief Chuks Ilozue said God has used their traditional ruler to bring endless joy to the community, commending him for all his efforts towards upliftment and progress of Ndi Nawgu.

While giving their support with two motorcycles for the security operatives in the community, the chairman of Nawgu Concerned Citizens Forum, Mr. Jerome Obiora reassured that they will not relent in contributing their quota to the development of Nawgu.
