The Member representing Anambra East and West Constituency at the House of Representatives, Chief Chinedu Obidigwe, has called for an alternative solution towards controlling the dangerous effects of incessant flooding in the riverine areas of Anambra State.
Chief Obidigwe made the call in his recent motion during plenary at the Federal House of Representatives in Abuja.
Amaka Chibuzor Okoye reports that according to the Lawmaker, who is the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Environment, the deluge which often submerge residential buildings and farmlands have caused many residents to vacate their homes especially in Anambra East and West communities.
Chief Obidigwe who went down memory lane on what his constituents experienced in 2012 noted that it left them with tales of woes, while many died due to one disease or the other just as hunger dealt with many.
He canvassed for the dredging of the Omambala River, which poses habitual threat to Anambra East and West, some parts of Onitsha, Kogi and Enugu states.
Chief Obidigwe further urged the Federal Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources as well as National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and the States Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, to include the dredging of Omambala River in the 2021 budget which he said will rescue the people in the affected areas from losing billions of their valuables to flood disaster annually.
He however admonished the people of his constituency to be careful and vacate their area once flood surges towards their houses.
