SIR NOBERT OBI

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra is currently embarking on the tour of the twenty-one local government areas in the state. The aim is rob minds, receive decampees into the party, fraternize with old and new members and ensure the welfare of members. The tours are equally meant to cross breed necessary information, using bottom-top and top-bottom approach.

For instance, the All Progressives Grand Alliance government in Anambra is insisting that shifting power to Anambra south senatorial zone was part of its campaign promises in the 2017 governorship election. This is to ensure equity, fair play, justice and peace. No doubt, it is hypocritical for certain people who had canvassed zoning the country’s presidency to the South East in 2023 to oppose zoning in Anambra state. Such people, to say the least, are doing so for their selfish interests.

Remarkably, in the said 2017 governorship election in Anambra state, APGA, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC) and indeed almost all other political parties zoned their governorship position to the North Senatorial District, as the zone had never produced the governor of the state.

Anambra Central Senatorial District did three years and 10 months under Dr. Chris Ngige and eight years under Mr. Peter Obi. So, the zone held the governorship for almost twelve years. Therefore, for equity, all political parties must now consider the Southern zone in the 2021 guber poll.

The South had its turn under Dr Chinwoke Mbadinuju for four years from 1999 to 2003 and did not have a second term. It also had Chukwuemeka Ezeife for two years, making six years and at the end of Obiano’s tenure, the North would have done its eight years.

Suffice it to say therefore that when we are talking about fair play, the south senatorial district of Anambra state is the only zone that has not had the governorship for eight years. So, APGA is saying that equity demands that South should have it.

An argument can only ensue when the South has had its fair slot of the governorship seat of the state come 2021. For now, it remains the only zone that has not had two terms in office. It is pertinent to note, though, that in arguing for zoning, neither the state government nor APGA has any particular individual or candidate in mind. The Obiano-led administration and APGA are only interested in enthroning sanity and deepening democracy in Anambra State.

Happily, many rational thinkers, realists, political analysts and leaders of thought, including traditional and religious leaders, business magnets, town unions, and grassroots mobilizers have all endorsed the zoning principle. These people and groups have been working for long to promote good governance.

All those opposing zoning should therefore think about the overall interest of the state, Ndigbo and the country in general. It is unfair for a particular segment to continue to retain power to the disadvantage of other parts of the state.

On the other hand, the tour is very appropriate to take home the exploits of APGA in Anambra since 2006. There is no doubt that APGA has restored Anambra to the path of law and order, peace, stability and progress. It is on record that APGA has never experienced internal crisis that disrupted the good governance and delivery of democracy dividends to Ndi Anambra. Even a blind man can see that Anambra, under the APGA administrations, has faired better since 2006.

To cap it all, since coming on board on March 17, 2014, the two terms administration of Governor Willie Obiano, have upped the ante of good governance and delivery of democracy dividends in the state. Hence, APGA is a tested and trusted political party in Anambra in particular and Nigeria in general.
