The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor
has bemoaned leadership challenges facing Nigeria in her sixty years
history as an independent nation.

Most Reverend Ezeokafor stated this, while briefing newsmen on
Nigeria’s 60th Independence Anniversary at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral,
Awka.

Religion Correspondent Amaka Chibuzor Okoye reports that  he attributed most of the challenges confronting the nation to the
inability of political leaders to design people oriented policies that
would address issues affecting the people.

The Catholic Bishop noted that agitations from different ethnic
backgrounds for self actualization, were indications that there were
serious issues begging for government’s attention in the country.

Most Reverend Ezeokafor urged the Federal Government to look into such
clamours, since individuals have the right to decide where to belong
and what to believe in a democratic setting.

The Bishop explained that one of the best ways of solving the nation’s
problems was to review the 1999 constitution, which he insisted was
handed to the country by the military.

Most Reverend Ezeokafor was of the opinion that the nation had the
intellectual and natural resources needed to accelerate  development,
when utilized efficiently.

He frowned  at  the soaring unemployment rate in the country,
stressing that the removal of oil subsidy should be able to generate
revenue to be utilized in creating more jobs and improving the lots of
the people.

The Bishop was unhappy over the condition of refineries in Nigeria,
noting that the nation had no business importing petroleum products.

He however, expressed  satisfaction with   the strategies deployed by INEC
in Edo State to ensure a hitch free and credible election and urged
the Commission not to deviate from such standard in future.
