President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a special salary scale and new
retirement age for teachers.
The President increased the number of service years for the teachers
from thirty-five to forty and retirement age of sixty to sixty-five.

Ekwi Ajide of our Abuja bureau, reports that President Buhari, who was
represented by the minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu also
approved building of low-cost houses for teachers in rural areas,
sponsorship of teachers to at least one refresher training per annum,
expansion of annual Presidential teachers and schools awards to cover
more categories with outstanding winners to be considered for National
Awards and National Productivity Order of Merit awards among others to
motivate and restore the lost glory of Teachers.

While explaining that the implementation of the new teachers’ salary
scheme was to encourage teachers in delivering better services,
President Buhari announced that the special salary scale is for basic
and secondary school teachers.

Earlier, the National president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Dr
Nasir Idris, urged the federal government to ensure that the COVID-19
protocols and guide lines for safe reopening of schools are strictly
complied with by all concerned, in order to safeguard the health and
safety of the learners, teachers and the school community as a whole.

High points of the event were presentation of prizes to best
performing teachers, in which Anambra State scored high as well as
march pass by teachers.
