Thousands of youths, including the clergy, popular artistes,have staged a peaceful protest from the Dr Alex Ekwueme square in Awka, to SARS office in Awkuzu, in continuation of the ongoing demand to, among other things, EndSARS and reform Nigeria Police.
The artistes, including Phyno, Flavour, KCee, had in a recent tweets, disclosed plans to join Anambra EndSARS movement, following public outcry against unlawful detentions, extra judicial killings and other allegations of impunity leveled against Officers of the disbanded SARS Unit of the Nigeria Police.
Governor Willie Obiano had, while addressing EndSARS
protesters previously, announced sack and recommended prosecution of a former Officer in Charge of SARS in the State and his Senior Special Assistant on Security, Mr James Nwafor, over alleged impunity as SARS Commander in the State.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the ABS, Chief Uche Nworah, who bared his mind on the demands of the protesters, commended the State government for restoring people’s confidence in governance in his address to the protesting youths, describing Nigerian youths as industrious.
The Member representing Nnewi North Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Nonso Okafor, who described the ongoing protest as a way Nigerian youths have chosen to vent their anger against Police brutality, called for speedy and genuine response to their demands, even as he urged the youths to remain peaceful in the exercise.
Narrating how he was nearly shot by a SARS Officer over mild argument, a Catholic Priest, Reverend Father John Mark Okafor, called on security agencies to be alive to their responsibilities, which includes saving, instead of wasting human lives.
Others, including Miss Favour Nwachukwu and Mr. Innocent Dim urged government not to relent in prosecuting SARS Officers found guilty, describing stories of unlawful detentions and extra judicial killings by the disbanded SARS officers as annoying.
