As part of humanitarian response to cushion the effects of hunger
occasioned by COVID-19 Pandemic, Justice Development and Peace
Commission, JDPC, has distributed food to vulnerable members of the
society to commemorate World Food Day.This year’s theme is “Build, Grow,Nourish, Sustain Together”.

World Food Day, launched by the United Nations in 1945 is an annual
event celebrated on October sixteenth.
According to the Executive Director JDPCOnitsha Archdiocese,
Reverend Father Dr. Edwin Udoye, food remains the most important
essentials of life.

Lamenting that the harsh economic situation has impoverished the
poorest of the poor, with prices of food and essential commodities
skyrocketed, Reverend Father Udoye said the Archdiocese of Onitsha
targets to feed over two thousand, two hundred vulnerable persons in
four regions of the Archdiocese.
He commended the efforts of Archbishop Valerian Okeke in cushioning
the effects of COVID-19 at various parishes.

Speaking at St. Jude’s Catholic Church Fegge, Onitsha, a JDPC
official, who spoke on behalf of the executive Director, Mrs. Cynthia
Enweonwu-Arinze, said the commission joined the international
community to impact on humanity noting that the initiative, which is
the first in the history of JDPC, was formed by the need to alleviate
the plight of the downtrodden.

At St Charles Lawangas Catholic Church Okpoko, the story was not
different, as similar food was distributed while Mrs. Mary Robert
highlighted that food is crucial in sustaining lives.
Some of the beneficiaries, Mr. Matthew Ogbonnaya and Mrs. Pauline Kalu
appreciated JDPC for the act of Charity.
