As Anambra joins the rest of the world to mark this year’s world Radiology day, experts have challenged governments and well meaning individuals to invest in radiological equipment as a primary step to achieving better health care provision.
A Lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Dr. Samuel Udobi and Dr. Michael Aronu who is a Consultant Radiologist at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, agreed that despite the huge importance of radiological equipment to the Health Sector, it has been grossly neglected in Nigeria especially in South East Nigeria.
World Radiography Day is celebrated every November 8, each year to mark the anniversary of the discovery of x-radiation by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.
Radiographers worldwide also use the day and the days around the date to promote radiography as a career, build greater awareness of the value that radiology contributes to safe patient care, and improve public understanding of the vital role radiologists and radiographers play in the healthcare continuum.
Speaking on the significance of the day, Dr. Udobi said that the importance of radiology cannot be over emphasized as it plays a vital role in unmasking most hidden health issues and helping the medical personnel have an ideal picture of major health challenges facing patients.
For Dr. Aronu, the scarcity of radiological equipment in South East Nigeria can be attributed to high cost of the equipment which becomes impossible for individuals and private hospitals to acquire and noted that irrespective of the high cost of equipment, the Service charges of radiology is cost effective and advised the state citizenry to imbibe the culture of regular check up especially through diagnosis to ascertain the cause of their health status.
The International Day of Radiology 2020 will be dedicated to all imaging professionals for their essential role in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic making an indispensable contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 patients.
