Wife of the Governor of Anambra State and founder of the charity
organization, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative, CAFE, Dr Mrs
Ebelechukwu Obiano has been conferred with Sun Newspaper’s 2019 Most
Supportive First Lady award.
The award, an elite honour from the Sun Publishing Limited, backed
strongly by the newspaper’s board of directors, recognizes governor’s
wives who have made remarkable impacts in human capacity development,
built socio-political and economic policies that have made lasting
effects on the people by evolving programmes in support of their
husbands’ government.
The event which took place at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia.
Dr. Mrs Obiano, according to the award donors, was found worthy of the
award for her humanitarian programmes, which have seen the
construction and donated of twenty-seven furnished houses to widows
and less privileged women across Anambra State over the past seven
years, training and empowerment of over four thousand women and youths
in different vocational skills, as well as rehabilitation of mentally
challenged and depressed persons and treatment of children with cleft
lips and palates.
Speaking shortly after receiving the award, Dr Mrs Obiano who
dedicated the award to the widows, poor women and all Anambra women,
said that she felt elated for being honored by the organization,
noting that even though she had always preferred to be discreet in her
charity course, it gives a sense of satisfaction and joy to be
appreciated.
Dr Mrs Obiano who reserved special praise for her husband, whom, she
said, has remained her backbone, maintained that her path in life has
always been designed to leave a lasting impression on humanity,
pledging never to stop touching lives.
Speaking on why Dr Mrs Obiano was chosen for the award, the Managing
Director and Editor in Chief of Sun Publishing Limited, Mr Onuoha Uke,
who led top staff members of the organization to the award ceremony,
said that the award was based on pure merit because of the governor’s
wife’s consistent support to her husband, Governor Willie Obiano and
her achievements in youths and women empowerment.
In their respective remarks, the Traditional Ruler of Nteje, Igwe
Rowland Odegbo, the Auxiliary Bishop of Awka, Most Reverend
Jonas-Benson Okoye, the wife of the Archbishop Ecclesiastical Province
of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Mrs Martha Ibezim, each spoke
of how the Governor’s wife has used her NGO to change lives and put
smiles on the face of humanity.
In attendance at the event were the Speaker of Anambra State House of
Assembly, Right Honourable Uchenna Okafor, a former Governor of
Anambra State, Dame Virgy Etiaba, Chief Judge of the state, Justice
Onochie Anyachebelu, a former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Chief
Emeka Sibeudu, Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public
Enlightenment, Mr C-Don Adinuba and other exco members, the
Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor
Greg Nwakoby, Wife of former Vice-President of Nigeria, Mrs Ifeoma
Ekwueme, and traditional rulers, among other dignitaries.
