The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Public Utilities and Water Resources, Mr. Victor Meju, says the recent increase in the cost of electricity will bring about increased investment in Power sector, which will in turn affect the economy in positive ways.
He stated this while speaking on this year’s “Africa Industrialization Day”, set aside in 1989 by the United Nations’ General Assembly, to raise awareness on the importance of Africa’s industrialization and challenges.
Mr. Meju, an Engineer explained that the recent increase in the cost of electricity is in the interest of consumers, including industrialists.
While assuring of Anambra State government’s support to industrialists, Mr. Meju noted that a memorandum of understanding between the state government and the Transmission Company of Nigeria, on improved power supply in the state is on course, and will ultimately benefit industrialists in the State.
Speaking on the challenges affecting Nigeria, and indeed Africa industrialization, a front line industrialist, Dr. Godwin Okafor, called for strong economic policies and programmes that will support the private sector in providing jobs for the masses, regretting that multiple taxation, unsteady and high cost of electricity, unfavorable foreign exchange rates, among others, have remained challenges to industrialists.
On the Anambra State Cargo Airport at Umueri in Anambra East Local Government Area Dr Okafor while commending Governor Willie Obiano for such initiative maintained that the Airport project on completion will boost businesses the more in Anambra State.
Dr Okafor who hails from Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area, Canvassed for a tax holiday of at least five years for new industries for enhanced industrial development of the Nigerian-Nation.
Others, including Messers John-Jay Asemota and Jude urged relevant bodies to improve electric supply at reduced cost, as well as patronize local products.
The State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mr. Charles Nworji, who regretted high percentage of Nigerians with strong preference for foreign products, stressed the need for attitudinal change to encourage the growth of indigenous firms.
