Ojoto, community, in Idemili South Council area has raised alarm over the illegal excavation of soil that could devastate lruebenebe village of the community.
The excavation said to be engineered by an influential son of the community now possess challenge to the environment as the man-made disaster is capable of creating misunderstanding and breech of Peace among the community members.
According to the people, the excavation started one month ago with activities ongoing day and night.
ABS on arrival at the site observed that heavy equipment and earth moving machine were on ground as the construction firm lined up tippers for evacuation of sand from the site.
Conducting ABS round the area, an indigene, Mr. Donald Okoye, who spoke on behalf of the Traditional ruler, Igwe Gerald Mbamalu, said such activities have negative effect on the ecosystem as economic trees and residential buildings close to the area will be adversely affected.
Mr. Okoye explained that various efforts and legal processes have not helped matters, as the excavation continues daily.
Lamenting the huge loss, he said no environmental impact assessment was conducted prior to the activity, and pleaded with the state government to assist them in averting possible disaster and land degradation in the community.
