Unity of purpose has been emphasized as a panacea to ending all forms of violence and abuse against the girl child, women and the male gender.

This was the center of discussion at a Gender Based Violence event held in Awka.

Gender based violence and abuse, which include rape, husband and wife battering, child abuse, sexual molestation, sodomy among others are serious issues affecting the society.

To properly understand the issues and also arrest the situation, Civil Society Organizations in collaboration with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Network, ROLAC, and the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs organized the event, which coincided with the World Human Rights Day.

In her remark, the Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, said  that aside creating awareness, there is  need to also prosecute offenders on gender based violence is important to serve as a deterrent to others.

The chairperson, Child Protection Network, Mrs. Uju Loveth called for all hands to be on deck if the issue of gender based violence is to be nipped in the bud even as she noted that effective response and justice system will help to curb it.                           

Mrs. Josephine Onah of ROLAC in her lecture noted that there is need for proper understanding of the issues and galvanizing support to end the scourge.

Later in an interview, a Civil Society member, Mrs. Hope Okoye, said there is need for more government support and the provision of logistics to procure needed items when necessary to fight the scourge, especially offenders while Mr. Oluebube Ngige and Excellence Nwafor said constant awareness will help to create consciousness on gender based violence.

The event featured the decoration of ambassadors against gender based violence including the Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Lady Mezue, the traditional ruler of Nawgu, Igwe George Okaa-Onwuogu and the state coordinator of National Human Rights Commission, Mrs. Nkechi Ugwuanyi among others.
