The Director-General of Youth Mobilization, Technology and Innovation, Anambra State, Mr. Emeka Okonkwo has inaugurated the third edition of his annual football tournament at Boys’ High School, Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area.,The kick off match which was between Ukwulu Football Club and Umunnachi Football Club which took the first place trophy home last year, Ukwulu side which lost five goals to one to the defending champions in the last tournament, shared the spoils in the one-all draw after both sides cancelled each other’s goal in the first half.,
The football tournament, according to the sponsor Mr. Okonkwo, who is the immediate-past Transition Committee Chairman of Dunukofia Local Government Area, is meant to engage youths positively with notable scouts coming around to look out for talented footballer stars and comes with a coveted price of five hundred thousand naira for first place winners, three hundred thousand naira for runners-up and two hundred thousand naira for third place winners.
Contesting for the grand price are the six towns under Dunukofia Local Government Area, namely, Umunnachi, Ukpo, Umudioka, Ukwulu, Ifitedunu and Nawgu.
Speaking shortly after the game, the Director General of Youth Mobilization, Technology and Innovation, Anambra State, Mr. Emeka Okonkwo, who is the sponsor of the tournament, said that through the competition, talented youths have been spotted and connected overseas to ply professional footballing career.,He stated that his major aim was to capture youths under a united and idea-focused umbrella, and engage them with something that would blossom their dreams to succeed on every stage, adding that he intends to have the competition at the state level.,
Also speaking, the Anambra State Association of Town Union’s Youth Leader in Dunukofia Local Government Area, Mr Chukwugozie Ilokolobia, noted that the football tournament has gone far in achieving results by reorganizing the mindsets of youths for a better purpose, and urged other capable hands to take a leaf from Mr Okonkwo’s vision.,In his remarks, the Member Representing Onitsha South Constituency One at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Uzoma Eli, who performed the official kick at the opening game, praised the sponsor for being a champion of youth empowerment, emphasizing that the tourney would add further verve to the youth development vision of the present administration in Anambra State.
The finals of the tournament will take place at Saint Mary’s High School, Ifitedunu, on December twenty-sixth.
