The Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Budget Implementation, Monitoring and General Manager of the state Public Procurement Bureau, Chief Melie Onyejepu says the agency has saved the state government three billion naira since the Agency came into existence in June, 2020.
Chief Onyejepu stated this while exchanging views with members of the Governor’s media team during the ‘Meet the Media’ held at Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.

While giving an overview of their activities Chief Onyejepu said they monitor the budget implementation to check whether it is in line with the bill passed by the State House of Assembly.

Speaking on the existence of E-procurement, Chief Onyejepu said that all bidding process can now be initiated and concluded online, saying that as a result of what they do at the Budget office, an average of seventy eight to eighty three percent budget implementation have been achieved and added that Governor’s wife does not have any provision in the budget.

He said that they amended the procurement law in the state to be in tandem with what is acceptable worldwide, as a result of which attracted commendations from World Bank.

Chief Onyejepu recalled that when they assumed office, , they noticed that under the procurement process, there were avenues for corruption, which they changed to ensure that the bidding and contracting processes are in tandem with international best practices.

Concerning procurement activities, he pointed out that the Tenders Board has been moved to the Ministries, explaining that their job at the Agency level, is to ensure that the right people are there, even as they have the right to sanction those who violate procurement law.
