Activities heralding the one hundred and twenty first ovala Aguleri have commenced with the second edition of Okanga Aguleri lecture series.
The event took place at Ikenga Hall, Igboezunu Aguleri, Anambra East council area.
The second edition of Okanga Aguleri was attended by illustrious sons and daughters of the community, government functionaries, Ndi ichie and Ndi oji ani Aguleri, members of the Igwe’s cabinet, youths, women groups , students from the town as well as representative from Ohaneze youths and Omabala Union.
After the usual kolanut ritual by the traditional ruler of the community Igwe Michael Idigo, the traditional ruler explained that he wanted something new to feature during the famous Ovala Aguleri series, a reason why he initiated the lecture series.
Igwe Idigo also explained that the activities started on the 28th of December with children party adding that the lecture series have brought about benefits as each village has taken it upon themselves to build a village where the lecture will be holding.
In a remark, the Commissioner for Agriculture Mr Nnamdi Onukwuba, said that Anambra is blessed with almost one hundred percent arable land which Omabala has a good percentage of as the major food basket of the state, but regretted that communities in Anambra East, Ayamelum and Anambra West have refused to release some portion of lands to the government to aid massive food production in the state.
Mr Onukwuba announced that federal government has mapped out seven point five billion naira to revamp the water irrigation system in Ifite -Ogwuari to aid dry season farming in parts of the area.
In his lecture with the theme “The future Economy of Ndi Igbo: the place of Anambra Agro Economy,” a guest speaker Reverend Father Professor Hyacinth Ichoku, explained who the Igbos are, their culture and cultural values which he said gave the Igbos advantage over other regions.
Earlier, the chairman Okanga lecture, Professor Boniface Udedibia while introducing the lecture topic said that Agriculture has been sustaining the Nigeria economy until the advent of oil exportation, adding that until the country returns to agriculture devoid of politics, its economy will continue to be in ruins.
The chairman local organizing committee of the event, Chief Tony Oli of Anambra Sports Commission, and another member of the committee, Mr Amaechi Akora of ASWAMA maintained that the lecture aimed to reawaken the giant in Ndi Omabala, expressing satisfaction that the youths of the area have been challenged to go into modern method of agriculture.
