Anambra state government has inaugurated a fifteen man committee to look into the boundary dispute between Aguleri and Umueri communities in Anambra East Local Government Area.
The Panel was inaugurated by Governor Willie Obiano at the Government House Awka.
The Committee has Retired Air vice Marshal Ben Chiobi as its Chairman, and the Permanent Secretary office of the Secretary to the State government, Mrs Ndidi Onuigbo as the Secretary.
Other members of the Committee are Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Dr Uju Nworgu, Commissioner for Lands, Mr. Bonaventure Enemali, Chairman Anambra State Physical Planning Board Mr. Chike Maduekwe, Chief Security Officer to the Governor, Mr. Chinedu Aniagboso, Retired Surveyor-General of the State, Chief Ifeanyi Ajoku, Eze Michael Idigo of Aguleri, as well as Igwe Ben Emeka of Umuleri.
The President General of Aguleri, Chief Hipo Onwuegbuke, President General of Umueri, Mr Sunday Udearo, Youth Leader of Aguleri, Mr Nnamdi Adimora-Ikeli, Youth Leader of Umueri, Comrade Abraham Uberu and Transition Committee Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area are also members.
The terms of Reference of the committee include to establish the immediate cause of the dispute between the two communities that occurred on Saturday, sixteenth January, 2021, invite and interview families that own the lands in dispute, and as well establish the boundaries between Aguleri and Umueri.
The Committee which has three weeks to complete its assignment is also expected to recommend other possible solutions that will enthrone lasting peace in the area.
Inaugurating the committee, Governor Obiano who was represented by his deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke, asked the members to bring their expertise to bare in handling the task that is entrusted into their hands, and to ensure they deliver on specification and restore peace and harmony in the area.
Speaking on behalf of others, the Chairman of the Committee, Retired Air Vice Marshall Chiobi promised never to disappoint the state government which found them worthy to handle the dispute, and expressed hope that with the presence of the two traditional rulers and other critical stakeholders of the two communities in the Committee, the actualization of their mandate would be easy.
In various interviews, the Traditional Ruler of Umueri, Igwe Ben Emeka and his Aguleri counterpart, Eze Michael Idigo, while thanking the state government for making efforts towards resolving the age long communal dispute, explained that they will jointly partner the state government to achieve its goal in the issue, and called on their subjects to embrace peace as crisis does not pay but rather militates against development.
