Dame Mary Asibi-Gonsum from Jos Catholic Province has emerged the National President of Catholic Women Organization, Nigeria.
She emerged during the annual general assembly and launching of ECHO Magazine after a four-year successful reign of Barrister Cecilia Okolo.
The event, commemorated with a High Mass by Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor of Awka Catholic Diocese, was attended by executive members from the fifty-six diocese in Nigeria.
In his homily, the Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Reverend Calistus Onaga said that women are endowed with wonderful virtues to control the family and the church positively stating that the fundamental message of Christ, which the women should propagate, is the sacrifice of love.
Most Reverend Onaga, who maintained that love is the basis of Christianity, urged the women to spread the message across and never allow the issue of materialism, election, wealth and other things supersede the sacrifice made by Christ, advising them to be role models.
The Commissioner for Basic Education, Professor Kate Omenugha in her speech thanked God for what He is using the women to do in the church and charged the incoming President to lead with love and respect church hierarchy.
In her address, Barrister Okolo applauded the women for their unflinching support, which she attributed to the seamless actualization of their aims and objectives, asking them to work assiduously in their various capacities to enthrone a violent free world for women and the girl child, through speaking out and discouraging early girl child marriage among other ill treatment against women.
Later in an interview, Dame Mary, who said she felt elated for the privileged to serve in God’s vineyard, promised to take the women to greater heights charging them to embark on aggressive evangelism to all the nocks and crannies of the nation.
The event featured unveiling of ECHO Magazine and presentation of awards to some members of the organization.
