Anambra State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency has embarked on mock validation and remedial activities in Open Defecation Free certified committees in Anambra East Local Government Area.

The purpose of the exercise was to know if the people are still practicing open defecation in their areas.

Among the areas covered are Ugwunadagbe Aguleri, Umuala Aguleri, Umuokpoto Aguleri, Umuawunu Aguleri, Isioye Nando and Mgbago Umueri all in Anambra East Local Government Area.

Findings during the exercise confirmed that the inhabitants of the areas are no longer involved in open defecation as they have fully embraced the use of toilet facilities.

When the team visited Etimba Memorial School Umuokpoto Enugwu Aguleri, it was discovered that the toilet facility was improved with drop hole cover and the tippy tap hand washing facility was intact while the environment was clean and ready for pupils to resume classes.

The WASHCOM Chairman Umuala Eziagulu Aguleri community, Mr Michael Odikpo said he is personally in charge of the water borehole in the area and recalled that before the borehole was sited in their area, they were fetching water from ODIKAEZE stream and their children after fetching water usually ended up attending schools late, while the stream itself is not good for consumption resulting to various heath challenges.

He expressed satisfaction that since UNICEF, RUWASSA and WASH sited the borehole in the area, their children now attend schools on time, while the environment has remained clean with no more open defecation.
