The coronavirus pandemic is a deadly monster that has brought global society to a screeching halt.
As it rapidly spreads across the planet, scientists and public-health experts are racing to limit the devastation.
Against this backdrop, ABS Correspondent Emmanuel Chigbata monitored various churches in Awka and environs to ascertain the level of compliance of COVID-19 protocols.
Efforts to flatten the curve of the second wave of the pandemic is a collective responsibility by all including religious organizations irrespective of denominations .
In Nigeria, federal and state governments are taking proactive steps to curtail the spread of coronavirus throughout the country.
As the country experiences a steady increase in the number of confirmed cases, enforcement of preventive protocols has been intensified in all segments of the society including the church to effectively respond to the pandemic.
In various churches visited, including orthodox and unorthodox churches, it was observed that there were mixed compliance by the Christian faithful.
Majority are not wearing their facemasks, physical distancing was partially observed, while there was no provision of running water for washing hands in some of the churches .
Reacting to this development, the Assistant Parish Priest of Madonna Catholic Church Agulu Reverend Father Nick Okekeocha called on Nigerians to be cautious of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He charged churches across the country to strengthen the enforcement of strict adherence to all the COVID-19 protocols including wearing of face masks, using of hand sanitizer, ensuring physical and social distancing among others.
On his part the Parish Priest of Saint Augustine’s Missionary Parish Adazi Nnukwu, Reverend Gabriel Ezeudu, enjoined Nigerians to pray over the challenges currently confronting the country as well as observe the COVID-19 protocols in order to flatten the curve of the ravaging virus.
