The UNIZIK Temporary Site pedestrian bridge, Awka, is now free from every business activity.
The decongestion drive was headed by the Transition Committee Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Mr. Leo Nwuba.
Correspondent Chibuzo Obidike covered the exercise and reports that while speaking during the exercise, Mr. Nwuba who said that there is need to reduce carnage on that axis of the road informed government’s decision to build the bridge to help people cross the road safely saying that the enforcement was to stop people who were converting the bridge into a market, defeating the reason for which it was built.
The Awka South Boss noted that the council had issued notice and series of announcement to discourage the traders from continuing to trade on the bridge which he said has turned the bridge into a breeding hub for minor criminal activities.
Mr. Nwuba assured that going forward, the presence of security operatives will be stationed at the bridge daily alongside the task force to confiscate and arrest anyone found selling on the bridge, advising the traders to identify with the various markets in the capital city instead of converting the pedestrian bridge to a mini market.
While recalling how dangerous the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway was, a trader on the bridge, Mr. Emmanuel Nwagu revealed that on many occasions, commuters were crushed by speeding vehicles on the expressway as he said that they will register with approved markets in the area, blaming their action of trading at the pedestrian bridge to lack of funds and means of survival.
