The World Health Organization has urged Tanzania to start reporting coronavirus cases and share its data.
The WHO’s plea came after a spate of deaths of Tanzania’s government officials.
Tanzania is one of the few countries in the world that has not published data on COVID-19 cases.
This makes it difficult to know the extent of the spread of coronavirus in the country.
Although WHO director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that Tanzanians travelling outside the country have tested positive for coronavirus hence the need for Tanzania to take robust action both to safeguard its people and protect populations in these countries and beyond.
The President, Mr. John Magufuli, who said they defeated COVID-19 last year and would win, again this year, previously played down the virus and refused to take measures to curb its spread.
He only yesterday during the burial of the vice-president of Tanzania’s semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar, Seif Sharif Hamad, who died after his party said he had contracted COVID-19, encouraged the people to wear face mask to avoid infection even as the health minister said that Tanzania had no plans to vaccinate.
