The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, has dragged a forty-three year old widow, Stella Ndidiamaka Ekwerekwu, before a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) court, over allegations of trafficking and abduction of an eight month-old baby.
In the suit, the woman was accused of falsely presenting the baby to her late husband, Victor Ekwerekwu as theirs, thereby committing an offence that is contrary to section 27 (1) of the Child’s Right Act (2003), and punishable under section 27 (2)(b) of the same act.
Charged alongside Ndidiamaka Ekwerekwu, is one Nkechi Helen Ogbonankwo, who was said to have helped her to get the baby, but said to be at large.
Both suspects, are of F16 court road Onitsha, Ananbra state.
In an three-count (amended) charge filed by GJ Ayanna (Esq}, and marked FCT/HC/NY/CR/77/2020, the police chief said the offence was committed sometime in October, 2019.
The disagreement over the baby had compelled the IGP, to order that the child be subjected to a DNA test.
Ekwerekwu family had petitioned the Police Chief, claiming that their late brother’s widow, Ndidiamaka, brought the baby after her husband’s demise, under the guise that he was theirs.
They also claimed that the deceased never had any child with his widow in their eighteen years of marriage, alleging that the widow proceeded to the probate registry, where she registered the child formerly known as Ezenwa Onochie Ekwerekwu, as next of kin to the deceased.
