Economic Gurus And Development Experts converge on Awka for the 2021 Dr Emmanuel Egbogah Memorial Budget Round Table, organized by UNIZIK Business School , with the theme “Budget Cycle in Nigeria in the face of Covid 19 pandemic.”

The lecture series which was held online and partly on-site was named after late Dr Emmanuel Egbogah an internationally recognized Petroleum Economist and former Special Adviser to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

Speaking on the theme of the Round Table,Mr Babajide Ogunsanwo ,a public affairs and Data analyst, explained categorically how budgeting in Nigeria is on the reversal slid , giving that often times expenditure is always far more higher than the revenue without proper attention to the impact on the citizens of the country.
He described Nigeria Budget as a briefcase and insufficient to the growing population of the country.

While commenting on Covid 19 pandemic,he regretted that Nigeria had the lowest testing rate the world over and noted that the country’s low Covid 19 death rate was as a result of its number of younger population.

Other discussants including Dr Okey Ikechukwu, Executive Director, Development Specs Academy and Senior Fellow UNIZIK Business School ,Dr Emenike Ezinando , Permanent Secretary Anambra State Ministry of Lands, Professor Ezinne Nnabuife , School of Business Administration and Prof Steve Ibenta Department of Accountancy UNIZIK , harped on the need for Nigeria Budget designers to domesticate budgeting to capture the real needs of the increasing population of the country.

They recommended that for Nigeria to have her budget system right, she needs to prioritize,cut cost of governance as well as review it’s budgeting process by giving Health and Education sector more allocations as they have direct impact on the citizens of the country.

The Director UNIZIK Business School, Professor AU Nonyelu, in his opening remarks said inline with the legacy of the benefactor, the Budget Round- table would be sustained and reputable scholars would always be invited to brainstorm on topical issues and make recommendations.

Earlier in his virtual opening address the Vice Chancellor UNIZIK Prof Charles Esimone , thanked the UBS leadership for sustaining the lecture series and commended the discussants for making themselves available to discuss the burning issue like budgeting, promising to continue to give maximum support where necessary.

Earlier the chairman of the occasion Professor Emma Okoye identified corruption as the bane of budgeting system in Nigeria and called for more sponsors to sustain the lecture series.

In a vote of thanks, the Deputy Director UNIZIK Business School, Dr Chinedu Onyeizugbe, said this year’s lecture series is aimed at profering suggestions to budget designers to ensure early passage and proper implementation which inverably will help in transforming businesses and inspire leaders.
