Anambra State government says it is committed to tackling food insecurity through effective agriculture.
The Commissioner for Agriculture Mr Nnamdi Onukwuba stated this during the inspection of Ndikelionwu rice project in Orumba North Local Government Area.
Correspondent Valentine Mbadugha reports that Anambra State government is currently developing one thousand acres of land in Ndikelionwu, for rice production.
The expanse of land is said to be developing simultaneously in Ogbaru local government area.
This in addition to the already developed ones at Omor and Umumbo, among other places.
According to Mr Onukwuba, during the inspection exercise, the target of the state government is to achieve food sufficiency in the State which will lead to price reduction of food items in the local markets.
It will also absorb unemployed youths and women as the both rice farms targets to employ about two thousand youths and women which by extension will improve their standard of living.
The President-General, Ndikelionwu Welfare Association, Chief Edozie Obasi who thanked the State government for embarking on such project expressed the hope that food insecurity and hike in prices of commodity at the markets will be a thing of the past if every household key into the agricultural initiative and programme of the state government.
The Site Engineer, Mr Kenneth Dozie during the exercise assured of project delivery in a record time.
