Research has showed that despite significant progress made by several groups, organization and individuals to put an end to sexual molestation especially on persons with disabilities, the trend has been on the increase.

 

In continuation of fight against the menace the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD, Anambra state Chapter organized a one day sensitization meeting with Justice and Support Service providers and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

 

Correspondent, Amarachukwu Okafor reports that  the sensitization meeting titled “The Need for Implementation of Anambra State Disability Rights law 2018” has participants from the National Orientation Agency, the Anambra State Ministry of Education, Traditional Rulers council, Religious Leaders, state ministry of Transport, National Human Right Commission, Legal Aid, State ministry of Health, Civil Society Organisation among others.

They brainstormed and assessed the implementation of the Disability rights law in Anambra State.

 

Addressing the participants , the Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities Anambra State chapter, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke said before the existence of the law, life could be described as a nightmare to persons with disabilities even as he expressed joy over the implementation of the law which he said gives the association and its members legal backing and hope for years to come.

 

Comrade Okeke expressed the hope that the law will stop all kinds of discrimination and abuses on persons with disabilities and place them at par with their counterparts all over the world.

Giving an assessment on the Disability Rights Law, the state Team Leader, Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme, Mrs Josephine Onah while applauding the state government for the creation of the law, described its content as a good step in the right direction, saying that it will restore the confidence of people with disabilities.

The Disability Rights Law 2018 is a document housing rights and legal backing to be accorded to persons with disabilities, which create parity between persons with disability and non-persons with disability.

 

It criminalizes discriminations of all sorts and intimidation of  persons with disabilities as well as make provisions, such as right to education, drive, marriage, privacy among others to them.
