The Managing Director, Anambra State Housing Development Corporation, Chief Willie Okafor says the Corporation de-zoned an open space in dispute at AHOCOL Housing Estate, Awka to fast track development of the area.

House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that Chief Okafor disclosed this during a meeting between the House Committee on Public Petitions and the allotees of the Estate at the Legislative Complex in Awka.

According to Chief Okafor, an Architect, every layout plan in the state is subject to change at the discretion of the Housing Development Corporation.

He explained that the corporation de-zoned a plot of land in the estate initially designed for recreation park to a private developer because it has been lying fallow for over twenty years, coupled with the fact that residents of the AHOCOL Estate have not been paying what they are supposed to pay to the corporation.

He told the committee that even if an open space is mapped out for construction of a public institution, a developer still have to apply for him to take full concession of the plot, adding that the alottees of AHOCOL Estate made use of the open space in the area without applying for it.

On his part, the Chairman, AHOCOL Estate, Professor Stanley Udedi told the committee that all efforts they made to secure approval to use the open space proved abortive.

In his remark, the Chairman of the Committee, Chief Emeka Aforka called on the allotees of the estate to maintain peace as the committee will resolve the matter amicably
