Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Basic Education has called on Principals of Secondary Schools in the State to check drug abuse among students to safeguard their future.

The Committee made the call during their meeting with the principals of secondary schools under Onitsha Education Zone, at the Legislative Complex in Awka.

House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim was there and reports that while speaking during the meeting, the Chairman of the committee, Sir Ejike Okechukwu emphasized that the meeting was designed to admonish the principals in certain areas the committee has reports against them, figure out their challenges in day to day running of schools and ways to arrest them.

Sir Ejike disclosed that the Anambra State House of Assembly is currently in talks with the Executive Arm of Government on the best possible ways to recruit more teachers to fill the existing vacancies in schools to improve the standard of education in the State.

The legislator assured them that paucity of funds and other major challenges hindering the progress of academics in their schools will be addressed in no distant time.

On his part, a member of the committee and member representing Ogbaru Constituency Two, Sir Somtochukwu Udeze condemned the increasing rate of drug abuse by secondary schools which he said could jeopardize the student future and called on principals to check such immoral behaviour to safeguard their future.

In a vote of thanks, the Director of Onitsha Education Zone, Mrs Ugo Eze commended the committee for their timely intervention on challenges confronting their schools, assuring that they will carry out all their directives.
