The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it will recognize and work with only eighteen political parties, even for the forthcoming Anambra State gubernatorial Election slated for November sixth, 2021.
A statement signed by its National Commissioner and Chairman Voter Education, and Publicity Committee, Mr Festus Okoye, urged the seventy four deregistered political parties to await the judgment of the Supreme Court relating to the powers of the Commission to deregister political parties before engaging in any political activities.
It said the Commission is always ready to obey Court orders and will abide by any judgment delivered by the Supreme Court adding that the statement became necessary owing to various letters submitted to the Commission recently by some of the deregistered political parties signifying their intention to conduct primaries with a view to submitting names and particulars of candidates for the Anambra State gubernatorial election.
The deregistered political parties hinged their request to nominate candidates on the judgment of the Court of Appeal delivered on June eleventh, 2020 but the Commission said thatĀ Ā it will continue to recognize and work with only the eighteen registered political parties pending the final resolution and determination of the various appeals filed and pending before the Supreme Court as a result, INEC will not monitorĀ Ā primaries conducted by any of the deregistered political parties and will not issue access code to or accept the list and particulars of candidates emanating from such primaries.
