International Day Of  day set aside to celebrate and raise awareness on the Importance of all types of forest and trees outside forest.

In this special report, ABS Correspondent Valentine Mbadugha x-rayed the benefits of forest and trees to man and its environment.

 

According to his report, by the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on November 28, 2012, every 21st of March various events are being organized in all parts of the world to celebrate and raise awareness on the importance of forest to the present and future generations.

 

Since the day was first observed on 21st March, 2013, countries and states are encouraged to undertake efforts to organize local and national activities involving forests and trees such as tree planting campaigns to mark the international day of forests.

 

In an interview, the Permanent Secretary, Anambra state Ministry of Environment, Dr Emmanuel Okafor, explained that most of the challenges facing today environment is as a result of improper management of forest reserves.

 

While describing forest as part and parcel of living, Dr Okafor enjoined Ndi Anambra to join hands in preserving the forest within the state and also practice urban forestry which involves tree planting within their environment.

 

On her part, the Head of Forestry and Wildlife Department, Ministry of Environment, Mrs Nonye Achugamonye, stated that the importance of forests cannot be underestimated.

 

She explained that man depends on forests for survival.

 

Mrs Achugamonye added that besides providing habitat for animals and livelihood for humans, forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change.

 

Further research has proven that forests provides job for over thirteen million people across the world which makes it a great source of revenue for both individuals and government.
